Mangaluru, Feb 22: A felicitation function for top scoring students under Mangalore diocese with scholarships by Fudar Pratistan Puraskar 2013-2014 was held at Milagres hall on Sunday February 22.

Speaking on the occasion, George Pinto, deputy commissioner of excise, Udupi and Mangaluru said, “I want to congratulate Fudar Pratistan for encouraging the young students to prosper in studies. Around 30% of the education institutions are owned and managed by the Christian community but Christian students are lagging behind compare to other communities".

“Many dislike the government jobs thinking the pay is less. At present, government jobs are more secured and pay is better than the private firms. The government jobs also give opportunities for individuals to serve the society. All want to become engineers, thinking it would provide a cosy life or prefer to work abroad. As we study here, it is our duty to pay back to the society by working here at home. I am really worried about the interest towards IAS, IPS or KAS in the coastal region. The last IAS passed out was in 1978. We have such wonderful education facilities but interest towards government jobs need to be promoted”.

“Around 90% Punjabi youths are addicted to drugs and the drugs addiction in DK is no less. As a deputy commissioner of excise, I have taken many steps to curb the addiction in the region. I request the parents to watch over the habits of kids and encourage them to take up government jobs”.

Bishop of Mangalore, Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza presented scholarships for the year 2013-2014 to 150 students of PUC and degree classes studying in various colleges in city.

President of Fudar Pratistan, John D’Silva, Flavy D'Souza president of Catholic Sabha Mangalore Pradesh, L J Fernadis secretary and others were present on the occasion.

The programme began with invocation through a prayer dance. Elroy Kiran Crasta gave a floral welcome to the guests. Joseph Nazareth and Flora Castelino compered the programme.
