Caracas, Feb 24 (IANS/EFE): Members of the Venezuelan opposition have reacted to the arrest of Caracas Mayor Antonio Ledezma by signing an “agreement for transition”, which the government sees as proof of a conspiracy led by Ledezma and jailed opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez.

The impact of Ledezma's arrest continued Monday throughout the country while the US government, criticised by Venezuela for supporting Ledezma, denounced his arrest.

"His spirit and his state of health are unharmed, as Antonio is a strong man, tough, and absolutely convinced that everything that they can accuse him of is a lie," his wife, Mitzy Capriles, told the media Monday.

Ledezma was accused Friday of crimes of “conspiracy and association” for his alleged links to a plot to overthrow the leftist government of President Nicolas Maduro.

He is being held awaiting trial in the Ramo Verde prison where Lopez is incarcerated.

The Social Christian opposition party Copei reacted to Ledezma's arrest by signing the “national agreement for the transition”, whose authors are accused by the government of conspiracy.

According to Maduro, the agreement is proof of an alleged coup plot supported by Washington involving airstrikes on government targets including the presidential palace.

US officials have denied the allegations.

The opposition Popular Will party has sent a letter to the Organisation of American States asking it to evaluate whether Venezuela complies with the requirements of the Inter-American Democratic Charter.
