Indian IT exports to Africa cross $1-bn mark


Accra (Ghana), Feb 24 (IANS): Total computer software and services exports to Africa from India last year crossed the $1 billion-mark, India's Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC) has said.

The total computer software and services exports to Africa from India last year totalled $1.059 billion as against $926 million the previous year - ranking the continent after the US, Europe, Singapore and other Asian countries and Australia together with Oceanic countries, ESC said.

North America topped the list with $49.69 billion while Europe followed with $22.6 billion. Singapore, Hong Kong and other South Asian countries imported $4.18 billion worth of software and service, Middle East countries $2.06 billion, and Australia and Oceanic countries $1.8 billion.

Stating that the growing software exports show how India has developed the sector, ESC chairman Vinod Sharma said the country's software and information-enabled services exports is projected to reach $97 billion this year from the previous year's $84 billion.

The ESC said the total electronic equipment production of the world for last year was estimated at $2,025 billion and India's share of the global figure is 1.6 percent.

"China dominates world's production of electronics equipment with 44 percent of the global share followed by North America with 20 percent share, Europe with 19 percent and Japan with five percent," the ESC chairman said in a statement.

Last year, exports of electronic goods and components from India registered a growth of 5.23 percent over 2012-13.

"In value terms, the export of electronic goods in 2013-14 is estimated at $7.6 billion, down from $8.1 billion estimated for the previous year."

In the area of computer hardware, production declined from $4.5 billion estimated for 2012-13 to $1.6 billion for the year 2013-14.

Exports registered an 8 percent growth in 2013-2014 over the previous year. In value terms, export of hardware was estimated to be $430 million during 2014, down from $444 million in 2012-13.
