Mamata wishes to meet Modi for debt waiver

Kolkata, Feb 25 (IANS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday said she has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging a debt waiver and seeking an appointment with him to discuss the issue.

"We have long been pursuing with the Central government for waiver of the huge debt burden left upon us by the previous government in West Bengal. We have waited for more than three-and-a-half years with no results," Banerjee said on her official Facebook page.

"Our state needs immediate relief from the debt burden so that growth and development efforts could continue unhindered. I have, therefore, written to the prime minister to consider waiver of the debt burden on us immediately," she stated.

"I have sought an appointment to meet him along with a delegation of my members of parliament to discuss this issue," she said.

Blaming the erstwhile Left Front government for the debt burden, Banerjee said Rs. 28,000 crore are deducted every year towards the repayment.
