Pakistan welcomes Afghan peace talks

Islamabad, Feb 26 (IANS): Pakistan Thursday welcomed the "prospects" of peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban saying political solution is the only solution to the problem.

The comments came days after Afghanistan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah told the cabinet ministers that talks will begin with the Taliban "in the coming days".

"Our position on Afghanistan reconciliation process is very clear, a negotiated political, reconciliation is the only way forward, we welcome the prospects of peace talks between the Afghan government and Taliban," the foreign ministry said.

The Taliban have not confirmed talks with Afghan government and described the news reports as the "views and assumptions of the media outlets."

"Pakistan has always supported and will continue to facilitate an Afghan-led, Afghan-owned reconciliation peace process in every possible way," Xinhua news agency quoted Pakistani spokesperson Tasnim Aslam as saying at her weekly briefing in Islamabad.
