Turkish police detain suicide bomber near US consulate


Istanbul, Feb 27 (IANS): Turkish police detained a man threatening to detonate a suicide bomb in front of the US consulate in Istanbul Friday, media reported.

The police have been deployed to the Sariyer district where the US consulate is located, Xinhua news agency reported citing the Dogan news service, adding that Istanbul has been put on high alert.

The suspect, reportedly mentally unstable, said he was going to blow himself up while the special operation teams neutralised him.

The US consulate building, known as US Castle, is considered the best guarded consulate in Istanbul.
