Petrol, diesel rates hiked by over Rs 3 a litre each

New Delhi, Feb 28 (IANS):  Petrol price was today hiked by Rs 3.18 per litre and diesel by Rs 3.09, the second increase in rates this month on rising international oil rates.

The increase is effective from midnight tonight.

A litre of petrol in Delhi will cost Rs 60.49 from tomorrow as against Rs 57.31 currently while diesel will cost Rs 49.71 per litre as against Rs 46.62 at present, oil companies announced here today.

Prior to the increases this month, petrol price had been cut on ten occasions since August 2014 and diesel six times since October 2014.

Cumulatively, petrol price had been cut by Rs 17.11 per litre in ten reductions since August and diesel by Rs 12.96 a litre since its deregulation in October.

This trend was reversed when rates were raised on February 16.

"Prices of petrol and diesel were last revised upwards with effect from February 16 by Rs 0.82 per litre and Rs 0.61 a litre respectively (including state levies at Delhi)... Since the above price revision, there has been further steep increase in international prices of both petrol and diesel," Indian Oil Corp (IOC) said in a statement.

Also, the slight depreciation in rupee-dollar exchange rate together with firming international rates warrant increase in retail selling price of petrol and diesel, it said.

Fuel prices would have been lower but for four consecutive excise duty hikes since November totalling Rs 7.75 a litre on petrol and Rs 7.50 on diesel.

"The movement of prices in international oil market and INR-USD exchange rate shall continue to be closely monitored and developing trends of the market will be reflected in future price changes," the IOC statement said.

Harsish, let's consider crude oil only, out of which diesel and gasoline are produced (we, in India don't have GTL plants to convert natural gas into heavy hydrocarbons and as for gasoline, we in fact are exporting along with other refined stuff). Now, considering your equation 49.76 plus 3.2% = 51.352, just above 50$, can you tell me why this plus 3.2%?

All dumb congis here commenting without any rational... All are used to the usual subsidy raj, freebies & remain a developing country for ever....The usual congi strategy for 60 years...keep the country poor, exploit & rein for ever. But now we have a govt & a leader with a vision for the country which needs massive investments in infrastructure, power, irrigation, industry..etc as 1.25 billion cannot sustain with 70% dependency on agriculture. The economy needs to be diversified in to manufacturing & services. We have to slowly come out of this subsidy thinking & invest for our future.....Giving subsidy is the easiest thing a govt can do. Modi can also give big subsidies & take short term applause from all dumbs also, leave the country to decay forever...but he chose on a righteous path which is tough & involves brickbats, but ultimately will succeed in eliminating poverty from India when people get better education, power, opportunity, skills, more jobs & overall improvement in standard of living. We all should get involved in this nation building act for the next 15- 20 years so that India becomes a super power & not always expect easy freebies that too on a commodity like fossil fuel. To reduce dependence on crude import India too can invest heavily on oil & gas exploration in our seas, but where is the money with state run oil companies running on subsidies??...Finally we have a leader with a vision & goal for the country.Lets all support him....As the saying by Sarkar goes " Nazdik ki faayde ke liye door ki nuksan nahi honi chahiye"...Grow up congis...learn from small countries like Japan & Korea where a whole generation toiled to develop & secure the long term future of their nation...

There is a big difference....Hikes then were going to fund the stinking corruption of congis, be it coal, spectrum,thorium,defence...everywhere....Now moderate hikes are just in line with crude prices with focus on subsidy reduction so that investment can go in to building our future infrastructure.... People now know the money is being reinvested rather than to fill the congis first family's coffers....

But in India, when the oil price was plunged 60%, the consumers got nothing at the Gas stations, now the gas price is going upward to Rs. 3.18/liter for gas and Rs. 3.09 for diesel. Indeed, the biggest trick.

Always they say 'steep increase in international oil prices', but never specific. As per the info available on various websites, it's still under 50$/barrel. Rupee in fact has strengthened against USD, It used to be 62.13 a week ago, as of now it's 61.63!First a harsh budget for common man and now with this salting his wounds.
