Myanmar upgrades six major airports


Yangon, March 2 (IANS): Myanmar has upgraded six major airports in terms of safety and security by installing new equipment, an official report said on Monday.

According to the transport ministry, Japan International Cooperation Agency has donated equipment and vehicles worth 1.23 billion yen ($12.33 million) for upgrading the six airports of Yangon, Mandalay, Nyaung U, Heho, Thandwe and Dawei, Xinhua reported.

The donation is a part of bilateral aid programme between Myanmar and Japan, the ministry added.

The ministry has revealed that the six airports are used by about three million passengers annually and all Myanmar's airports are used by an estimated 4.4 million passengers every year.
