Mangalore, Jan 31: "Democracy is way of life for us Indians and not Hindutva. But a look at the present scenario proves that this theory has turned topsy-turvy in the last few years. Hindutva is proving very dangerous to the very existence of dalits," said Dr Rajaram Tholpadi, professor of political science at Mangalore University.
He was speaking at the Republic Day celebrations being organized by Mangalore Varsity chapter of All-Karnataka University-level SC, ST Teachers' Federation recently.
He further said that the country has prospered owing to its adherence to social laws such as communal harmony, equality and social justice. "It is by persevering with cultural diversities that we have to strive to achieve social equality and financial stability of all sections. Here religion, caste, creed and all others things should take back seat and only welfare of human beings should be promoted through communal harmony," he opined.
Dr Surendra Rao of history department of the Varsity too delivered speech on the occasion. He said that social justice without social harmony and democracy is baseless.
Mohan Swami, president of Research and Development Association for SC & ST presided over the celebration while Dr Shivanna of marine geology department and Dr Yadipadittaya, finance officer of Varsity were also present on the occasion.
