Senior lawyer assassinated in Pakistan

Karachi, March 4 (IANS): A senior lawyer from the minority Shia sect, who was also the counsel for many activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) party, was shot dead in Pakistan's financial capital Karachi on Wednesday.

Police and emergency teams reached the spot of the shooting and the area was cordoned off as a probe was launched into the assassination, Dawn reported.

The reason for the attack, however, is unclear.

Since 2007, increasing violence in Pakistan has found an urban epicentre in Karachi, with militants targeting political leaders, security personnel, clerics, tribal leaders, members of the Shia sect and schools.

Notably, a joint targeted operation was launched in the city amid great fanfare in September 2013 with the hopes of improving the law and order situation.
