17 kg tumour removed from woman's abdomen

New Delhi, March 4 (IANS): In a procedure that lasted over eight hours, doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here have successfully removed a 17-kg tumour from the abdomen of a woman, a statement said on Wednesday.

N. Devi, a resident of Bihar, had a "rapidly progressive huge mass abdomen" for the past nine months and even after the patient underwent ovarian cystectomy and chemotherapy in March, 2014, the tumour kept on growing, the hospital said.

The 30-year-old woman was referred to AIIMS in December, 2014 and after evaluation it was realised that surgery was the only option to treat her, it said.

The operation took place on February 26 and the 17 kg tumour was taken out successfully, AIIMS said, adding that the patient has recovered.

The team of doctors was lead by M.D. Ray, surgical oncology faculty at AIIMS.
