Man arrested after spending night on roof of Britain's parliament

London, March 8 (IANS): A 23-year-old man was arrested on Sunday morning after spending about eight hours on the roof of Britain's parliament building, media reports said.

Police arrested the man on suspicion of criminal damage and trespassing. So far, the reason as to why he stayed on the roof was not known, Scotland Yard said.

Media reports said the man showed up at around 9 p.m. on Saturday. The police officers, negotiators and fire police were called at the scene 15 minutes later, according to Xinhua.

The man, wearing a grey top and black trousers, was pacing up and down between buttresses on the edge of the roof. He was arrested at 5 a.m. on Sunday, and was taken to a central London police station.

Some media reports said the roof of the parliament building has been targeted by campaign groups who oppose an airport construction project at the Heathrow airport.
