Badrinath highway in Uttarakhand closed after snowfall

Dehradun, March 9 (IANS): The Badrinath highway was closed due to to heavy snowfall in Uttarakhand, officials said on Monday.

The inclement weather has also stopped the restoration and construction work at Kedarnath, one of the shrines of the famous annual "Char Dhaam Yatra". The other three shrines are Yamunotri, Gangotri and Badrinath.

State government officials told IANS that heavy snowfall on Sunday blocked traffic in the Lokhandi region of Chakrata, 86km from here.

Some landslides were also reported at the Rishikesh-Badrinath road near Khadchadha, Lambagad and light snowfall in regions like Gaursaun, Vedni Bugyal, Roopkund, Rudranath and Kuari Pass.

The Met department has predicted similar weather for the next few days after which, they said, summers would set in.

The winters have been unusually harsh in the hill state and the recent rains, and snowfall have only added to the miseries of the people here.
