'Rs.19,338 lakh spent on monument-conservation'


New Delhi, March 9 (IANS): An amount of Rs.19,338 lakh has been spent during 2014-15 on the conservation and maintenance of protected monuments against an allocation of Rs.23,575.90 lakh for the period, parliament was informed on Monday.

Union Minister of Tourism and Culture Mahesh Sharma informed the Lok Sabha during Question Hour that "an amount of Rs.16,963.86 lakh was spent in the year 2013-14 for the same purpose, while Rs.14,866.80 lakh was spent in 2012-13".

"These monuments are attended to regularly by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and due to all these continuous efforts, they are in a good state of preservation," Sharma said.

ASI looks after these protected monuments and at present there are 3,685 monuments being maintained by it.
