German woman fighting IS in Syria killed

Beirut, March 9 (IANS): A German woman who had been fighting with the Kurdish People's Protection Units against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group was killed on Sunday in the northeastern Syrian province of al-Hasakah, a monitoring group said on Monday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) gave no details about the German combatant's identity, pointing out that she succumbed to wounds sustained on Sunday after Kurdish-IS clashes in the town of Tal Tamr in the al-Hasakah province, Efe news agency reported.

The German woman is the third foreign fighter from the Kurdish units killed in al-Hasakah, and the first female foreign fighter to be killed there.

A British fighter was killed last Wednesday during clashes with IS militants in the area located between Tal Hamis and al-Houl in the al-Hasakah province.

On February 25, an Australian fighter was killed in clashes with IS militants in Tal Hamis.
