Egypt reopens Rafah crossing with Gaza for two days

Gaza, March 9 (IANS): Egypt on Monday reopened the Rafah crossing point on the border with the Gaza Strip to hundreds of stranded Palestinians, a statement said.

The crossing will open on Monday and Tuesday in both directions for students, patients and holders of dual nationalities, Xinhua news agency reported citing the statement by a Palestinian body in charge of crossings and borders, and attached to the Gaza interior ministry.

Last time Egypt reopened the terminal for two days was 47 days ago, it said.

The body added it has a list of thousands of Palestinians needing to travel abroad for different purposes, including medical treatment, business and education.

It is the first time Egypt has reopened the Rafah crossing since an Egyptian court ruled that the Hamas movement, which rules the Gaza Strip, and its armed wing, al-Qassam Brigades, are terrorist groups.

The Rafah crossing is the main point that links the Gaza Strip with the outside world.
