Keralites hold beef eating fest to protest ban in Maharashtra

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 11 (NDTV): Beef cooked in the open and Hindus and Muslims sitting together for a meal - this was how a section of people in Kerala protested on Tuesday against the recent ban on the meat in Maharashtra.

Beef in Kerala means both cows and buffaloes and its consumption has no religious overtones. Not only do some Hindus here eat beef, going by sales figures, it is also the most-favoured meat in the state.

The annual sale of beef is estimated at 2.3 lakh metric tonnes against the corresponding figure for poultry -- 1.51 lakh metric tonnes.

"I am a Hindu. I should be given the freedom to eat whatever I want, even when I am eating this," said Ajith P from Kannur, who was at the protest of DYFI, the state CPM's youth wing, at Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.

Sharing the dish with him was Ajeeth Muhammad. Though a supporter of Muslim League, he said he didn't mind backing a cause. "None of us here have issues with beef consumption. It is part of Kerala's culture. How can we be stopped from eating something we want to?" he said.

Heading the protest, DYFI's B Biju said, "This is a token protest against the ban of beef in Maharashtra and a warning for anyone who would want to implement the same in Kerala. Any ban our food will not be acceptable."

A state panchayat law lays clear guidelines for slaughterhouses - that an animal can't be slaughtered unless it is over 10 years old, or has been made unfit for work or breeding due to injury or deformity.

Digging into the beef curry before returning to the Assembly, CPM legislator P Sreeramakrishnan said, "I eat my beef. And so do many others in Kerala. Nothing will change."

Last week, President Pranab Mukherjee ratified the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Bill which bans the slaughter of calves and bullocks.

Anyone found selling or eating beef can be jailed for five years and fined Rs. 10,000. Only the consumption of buffaloes, which give inferior quality beef, will be allowed.

Beef traders - thousands of whom will be jobless - and a section of people in social media have protested against the ban, with hashtag #BeefBan trending for a while on Twitter.

The female species are called as mother. The buffalo is male so they are not treated as mother. By this logic cows should not be allowed to roam on roads and make roads smelly with urine and dung. How mothers are treated, the same treatment is desired for cows. The logic goes for toss and i will faint in giving the logical analysis of this belief. Pardon me please.

Since few months there have been various instances of some acts that were said to have been insulted some religions and the sentiments of the believers. These people keep on saying how freedom of speech and expression should be limited and should definetly exempt religions from scrutiny and mockery.

But now when it comes to eating beef when one particular religion regards cattle as holy, they dont seem to bother about hurting sentiments of millions of people. Such a hypocrisy shown by some people in this matter that it is just disgusting.

The whole idea of uproar about something because it hurts someone else's sentiments is just plain stupid.

You seem to have misunderstood the word secular. If you are a true secular then you must be the following -

    1) a person does not believe in supernatural beings, entities, or realms
    2) a person does not engage in religious behaviors
    3) a person does not identify as religious and is not a member of a religious community.

The Daily Mail dated November 28, 2014 has reported that nearly 250,000 to 300,000 animals, including buffalo, goats, birds etc., were slaughtered during the Hindu feast in Nepal, near India's border. I googled and saw the picture of thousands of animals in the pool blood. This was done to please the so called Hindu Goddess for bringing the good luck.

Same Hindus are supporting anti-cow slaughtering law. I wonder who makes the rules for Hindu religion?

If cow slaughter is banned in maharashtra, then observe it there. If cow slaughter is ok in Kerala, then observe that. Cow is sacred to Hindus, done make fun of it. If some Hindus not observing it, its their choice. Muslims and jewish people do not eat pork. Christians eat pork meat. Christians eating in from of muslims and jewish and making a mockery is wrong and humiliating to the faith. So keralites donk make mockery to hindus beliefs in defiance gathering beef eating hindus.

Is their sentiment inferior to your sentiment. If Jains were numerically superior in India and wants a blanket Ban on slaughtering of animals would you approve it?. It was a big big mistake by Maharastra govt to ban slaughter of cows. Thousands of poor farmers were counting on selling the cows once they are old.now they may commit suicide. At least the govt should have given time for the law to take efect so that these farmers could dispose of the older cows. An animal in the wild which is old gets killed and eaten by the bigger animals. It is a sort of mercy for the ailing animal. Same can hold true for domestic animals. Long term, the farmers will stop rearing cows and India will have shortage of cows milk. for pooja this is essential and we will be forced to import it from our neighbors, ie. enemies. The most likely neighbor would be China. They are capable of adulterating it with harmful chemicals or other animal milk. How do you all like that?

Beef is carrier of certain type of worms you are right...But this is not related to beef alone...even our vegetable and fruits are potential carrier of certain intestinal worms ....In India we put manure from this cattle to the plants...this is how you get indirect beef tapeworm in vegetarians.....There are other type of intestinal worms which specifical spread from vegetable and fruits we eat ....similarly there are pork tapeworms...there are worms which spread from our pets which we rise....there are hook worms, pin worms which spread due to unhygienic environment.....
If you cook meat at high temperature or freeze it.. eggs of this worm can be killed....if you boil vegetable and peel of the skin or wash fruits thoroughly before eating it...intestinal worms spreading through this medium can be killed...bottom line is what it is needes is clear healthy hygienic diet be it plant or animal

    @Shetty,
Insulting one’s belief means- to say bad words about his belief in an improper way
And please note that -not following /believing the teachings of a particular religion does not mean that one is insulting that religion.
For example suppose there is a child (say “X”) who believe his (biological) mother (say “Y”) as god. Does that mean that if any other random person (say “Z”) who refuse to accept that woman (“Y”) as his (“Z”'s) god then is “Z” insulting the the belief of “X”?. Absolutely not.
By the way isn’t banning cow meat is an example of forcing one’s religion on other people to follow the same.
If anyone considers a cow as god then he should not sell it, should not even sell its milk and should treat as god in all aspects of life. Should not give trouble to it for whatever reason.
I feel i have not insulted anyone's belief in my commentary.

How many cows does the man who talk about fertile land have at his home? What they are going to do when cows/bullocks get old and useless? Poor farmers cant keep them when they are useless for them? Does RSS/VHP made any arrangements for that. Can they buy those cows from farmers and pay for them and send those old cows to some places like Balika, Togadia, Shetty or Shankar who worship them. They can perhaps build a temple for them and worship them. See what's going to happen in Bombay soon. There will be more cows on the roads than taxis. A question for Shetty do you have cows at your house and if so, where are they?/ In my house I keep the idols of God in a high place and light a deepa and agarbatti and pray for sometime. What do you do with that living God?? Just leave her in the stable and throw her some dry grass and some rice water which is left over after you finished your dinner. Then leave her next day morning so that she can go to your neighbors compound and eat all vegetables they grow. This is not the way of treating the living God. Learn how to treat that living God fist before asking someone to respect your sentiments. Shankar, what do you mean by sentiments. I have sentiment people killing and eating fish because it is incarnation of Mahavishnu (Matsyavatar) My sentiment hurts when people eat pork because pig is one of the incarnation of Lord Vishnu (Varahavatar), feels very bad when people eat Tortoise meat because Vishnu saved this earth as a Kurma. Why only worship Rama and Krishna? What did thiese other incarnation did wrong? he did all for mankind. Is it just because Kamadhenu is in heaven you have sentiments? Why do you cut and use coconut tree (because Kalpavriksha is in heaven too) My sentiments hurts when people eat Chicken, lamb and mutton because they have lives and they cant protect themselves. I get hurt when people eat sabji, cos they have life but people don't realise it but above all I know people have rights to eat what they like

there are people in this Country who say every creature is divine. in this background will you stop eating chicken caring for others sentiment. the cow does not produce milk out of love for humans. it produces for its calf. that is nature but we steal cows milk. Do you think the Chicken which you eat is less divine because it has not helped humankind like giving milk, curd etc. there are chances of some people being born handicapped and may become burden to a family. does such person become less lovable than other members of the family because they do not contribute in any way to the family. Animals are to be loved and cared without questioning how much it has contributed to Humankind. Hence it would be preferable if we become vegetarian altogether. please do not be ive in granting divine status to Animals.

My European friend was very inquisitive about reports in the media regarding a ban on beef products in my state,i was a bit hesitant, since i do not consume it myself, i was tying myself in knots
explaining to him that it had a religious sentiment & so it was not appropriate for consumption.
He contended that if a cow/bullock has life, then a water buffalo/goat/sheep/chicken/egg/fish & even agricultural products such as plants have life...why not abstain from consuming these too... Rigveda, also spoke about no idol worship etc! people have come off long age ever since! its not a frozen "this book, only is good"! ... most of them have never read any book! because, Hinduism is a way of life!

And Modi has confirmed.. ONLY RELIGIOUS TEXT for his government is CONSTITUTION! let us debate on that! Quoting Veda upanishad viely... and if someone else does that to you... "you first understand the whole of Islam"! will not cut much ice with me!.. You say, you have no respect for constituion, then we debate further.. else these are not issues!

Yes, you hit the nail on the problem. Religious tolerance would prevail if we put country and constitution ahead of our religion. People conveniently hide under the freedom of religion given by the constitution when it suits them and go against the constitution when what is said in constitution conflicts with the faith. Faith becomes supreme and constitution becomes secondary. People want to debate on religious tolerance without pledging their allegiance before the constitution.

There is huge decline in the cows which produce good and quality amount of natural sources to grow agricultural products. The ban is not only to highlight a single religion request but to improve the natures way of agricultural method. Alternative option for beef meat eater can be made available but there is no alternate option for Cows compost. So understand that this is good cause and our future generation will be happy. So avoid eating beef meat and make our land fertile. Imagine in India having tea/coffee without milk...situation might arise if we fail to support against killing cows.

Hindu house warming function requires cow with calf to walk into the house first.

In our neighbourhood, a cow from a christian home had to do the honour/service, because none of the Hindu households had a cow. It is indeed difficult to rear a cow these days. All the love and reverence only in 'speeches, banners, shobha yatre', at home, they would rather stay away from taking care.

Ade Raga ade hadu......The cows can be stolen from the shed, only when Jeevan is having Kumbha Karna sleep... Wake up and breed some dogs which will help you..... but do not bark with them.

This is unwarranted & will aggravate matters. If they want to hold protests, please do so in your own state!!
