Gangster arrested after Gurgaon gun battle


Gurgaon, March 11 (IANS): A 28-year-old criminal - who has over 30 cases registered against him in Haryana and Rajasthan - was arrested after a gun battle with police here on Wednesday, officials said.

Chaman Meo, who hails from Pachgaon village in Mewat district, received five gunshot wounds during the shootout with the Gurgaon police crime branch, and was admitted to a hospital in Delhi.

Meo has 33 cases registered against him in Haryana and Rajasthan, including a few related to murder, attempt to murder and robbery.

After receiving a tip off about his movements, police barricaded national highway-8 (Delhi-Jaipur-Mumbai) near Pachgaon village, some 25 km from Gurgaon.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajesh Kumar said some people in a car opened fire at police when they were asked to stop.

Two people in the car tried to escape. Amid continuous firing, Chaman Meo was nabbed while the other managed to escape, he said.

Chaman Meo had escaped from Rajasthan Police's custody on March 23, 2014 near Taoru while returning from a court hearing in Gurgaon.

He was admitted to the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.

Police seized the car, a pistol and some cartridges.
