Turkey captures some 400 illegal migrants


Ankara, March 13 (IANS): Turkish authorities captured some 400 illegal migrants in a cargo ship en route to Italy.

According to a report by state-run Dogan News Agency, the coast guard on Thursday warned a cargo ship named "Dogan Kartal" which departed from Istanbul for search near Lapseki town in Canakkale province, Xinhua news agency reported on Friday.

As the vessel ignored the notice, the coast guard opened fire at the engine room, Canakkale Governor Ahmet Cinar said, adding that some 400 illegal migrants were found on board who shouted "to Italy or death."

The report also said the crew of five, comprising three Syrians and two Turks, have been detained.
