Swedish prosecutors to question Julian Assange over assault

London, March 13 (IANS): Swedish prosecutors have offered to visit London to question Wikileaks founder Julian Assange over allegations of sexual assault.

Prosecutors on Friday asked to question the WikiLeaks founder at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he has been staying since June 2012 to avoid a British extradition to Sweden, The Telegraph reported.

The Australian is wanted for questioning in Sweden over rape and sexual assault allegations by two women, which he denies, but fears the country could pass him on to the US where he could be tried for one of the largest information leaks in the country's history.

The Swedish prosecutors are also asking to conduct a DNA test.

Kristinn Hrafnsson, WikiLeaks's official representative, said that he was surprised by the development, given that Assange has been offering for years to be interviewed inside the embassy.
