Bengal Christian forum condemns gang rape of nun

Kolkata, March 14 (IANS): Condemning the alleged gang rape of a nun by dacoits in West Bengal's Nadia district, a state forum of Christians on Saturday accused the police of inaction.

The incident happened on Friday night when a dozen armed dacoits raided the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Ranaghat in Nadia district.

"The brutal incident of Jesus and Mary's Convent School at Ranaghat would not have taken place if police would have paid heed to the repeated appeal of Sister Superior for police protection.

"She was given life threat," said Herod Mullick, working president, Bangiya Christiya Pariseba (United State Forum for all denominational Christians), in a statement.

BCP said the incident is a part of a "greater conspiracy".

"The incident is not merely a case of ordinary robbery but a part of some greater conspiracy.

"We strongly condemn the incident, the inaction of police who brushed aside Sister's appeal for protection and demand immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the miscreants," said Mullick.

Strongly condemning the incident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to probe the matter.
