Di Maria to stay in Man United next year: Van Gaal

Manchester, March 15 (IANS): Winger Angel di Maria will be at Manchester United next season, according to manager Louis van Gaal.

The Argentine's poor form and dismissal in the 1-2 FA Cup quarterfinal defeat by Arsenal led to speculation that the record 59.7 million-pound signing may seek a move away. But van Gaal said: "I think he'll stay. His reaction and attitude after the defeat and the red card has been good."

The Dutchman, who defended the attitude of out-of-favour striker Radamel Falcao, also backed di Maria, reports BBC.

The 27-year-old Argentine, signed from Real Madrid in August 2014, has not scored and contributed just three assists in his last 10 appearances since December 1. He has had to move his home after an attempted burglary at his Cheshire house.

"Despite that incident he is very pleased to be here at Manchester United. I am always compassionate about a player's needs and although I cannot say anything for definite about his future, I don't think he will move," van Gaal said.

The 63-year-old manager, whose tactics and style of play have been criticised during his debut season in English football, also spoke about his own future at United and exuded confidence that he would see out his three-year contract.
