Pakistan church bombings kill 15; trigger violence

Islamabad, Mar 15 (IANS): Two powerful explosions rocked two churches in Pakistan's Lahore city on Sunday killing at least 15 people and triggering violence, media said.

Jamatul Ahrar, an offshoot of the Tehreek-e-Taliban, claimed responsibility for the deadly attack, news web sites said.

At least 78 people were hurt in the explosions at the Catholic Church and Christ Church in the city's Youhanabad area, home to the country's biggest Christian population.

The condition of 30 of the injured was stated to be critical, media reports said.

A large crowd was already in the area to attend the Sunday prayers and violent protests erupted in the area immediately following the blasts.

Television footage showed dozens of stick-wielding men, mostly belonging to the Christian community, ransacking the metro bus terminal in the city, Dawn online reported.

Enraged protestors held four injured policemen captive at a shop after the blast for allegedly watching a cricket match instead of performing their duties at the time of the bomb attack.

Witnesses said suicide bombers were responsible for the explosions but police have not confirmed this, a BBC report said, adding that the bombers are said to have detonated their explosives at the gates of the churches.

According to the report in Dawn online, Rana Mashood, a government spokesperson, said the government was determined to tackle the issue of militancy and added that "terrorists will be brought to justice".

He said they were not looking at the event as an attack on a particular community or members of one religion.

"We are not separated by religion, this is an attack on Pakistan, and we feel their pain," the media report quoted Punjab education minister Mian Mujtuba Shuja-ur-Rehman as saying.

Sunday's attack is the worst on the community since 2013, when twin suicide attacks at the All Saint's Church in Peshawar's Kohati Gate area killed 80 people and wounded over 100 others.

Meanwhile, missionary schools in Karachi and across Punjab will remain closed on Monday in protest against the attack.

President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif have strongly condemned the blasts.

Most unfortunate that a country which is a champion in religious intolerance is getting the highest and best aid from USA. Extending financial aid to a country which is doing nothing to stop terrorism is like abetting it. Of late, religious intolerance is growing around the world and the christians who are contributing the maximum towards acts of mercy - the least, the last and the lost - the lepers, destitutes, abandoned old people the sick and in the field of empowerment through social action are becoming victims of assault. It is time the world leaders wake and pass strictures towards such countries which are proclaimed offenders. We pray for the healing of the wounded and the repose of the soul of the dead.

World watches instantly via internet what's going on. As a match-stick can set forest trees on fire and char them and those amongst them, tongue has the power to set minds on fire. Hence please don't be frustrated, be wise, humble, compassionate and impartial in your judgments.

It's not possible to understand even our parents or closest kin all the time... But what keeps the bond is love. In love, there is understanding, forgiveness and mutual respect. I do not wish nobody hates nobody for the problems though we were at the same level as them when we came out of our mother's wombs (without malice and deceit)....I wish you understand my message of peace, love and hope. I am not affiliated with any religion however I would say everyone who loves is born of God to make known the father's presence amongst us. Everyone who loves cherishes life. Everyone who comes to know the value of life is for peace. And where there is peace, there is hope for the living.

The only force/education/religion/wealth that kept even the most homogenous societies together is “Agape Love”. .Members of different parts of community (including Govt officials) may sit together (civic engagement) every day and once in a while to meditate what’s good for themselves, society, humanity…It need not happen only in Lahore or Islamabad or Mecca or Vatican City or Washington D.C. or even in Heaven… It should start in your own small town…And that’s the true gathering of people in God's Name!

    Peace! Kal Gandikota

    @Jamal
How can you compare BD with pak Taliban? Does BD have AK-47's, did BD attack Pak's parliament the way Indian parliament was attacked, did BD do an attack on Karachi like 26/11, has BD made India a theocratic state like Pak, Has BD made indian Muslims disappear like the way Hindu s in Pak disappeared? No of course not. Please get your facts right. BD is far better than Taliban, IS, etc.

Divisive forces are acting like quasi Govt collecting protection money then carry out attacks and sow seed of hatred and violence.
Bomb attacks on Churches are to be condemned.
