Mangaluru: Forum for justice discusses city problems

Mangaluru, Mar 17: 'Forum For Justice' organized a debate cum discussion with elite section of the soceity and eminent persons of Mangaluru city on the subject 'Urgent civic problems' at Hotel Utsav, Vybhav hall kodialbail on March 16 in city.

Dr N Sridhar shetty, honorable president welcomed the gathering and said "The purpose of the debate-discussion is - Mangaluru city is developing fast, the boom in construction of multistoried buildings, establishment of mega insustries, SEZ, medical and engineering colleges etc have contributed to the rapid development of the city.However there is also rapid growth in the problems of pollution, corruption, land grabbing, drinking water scarcity, uncontrolled malaria, road accidents, addiction of youth to drug and alcohol, sexual atrocity and communal tensions, which make a normal citizen helpless and silent and dumb spectators."

The main discussion was on Sanitation and cleanliness in the city, many citizens spoke about various issues related to their location, many were unhappy with the recent contract of MCC with Mumbai based company.

Advocate Dayanath Kotiyan working president of 'Forum For Justice' explained the hard realities and practices followed by the Antony Waste Handling Pvt Ltd. He said, " The MCC provides tender of Rs 17 crores per annum, presently the waste handling and disposal work is not being handled efficiently and effecctively. With 97 people working in the company, only 50 percent of the domestic and industrial waste is lifted and disposed. The open drains, roads, beaches have remained untouched by the contractor.The citizens throw the other 50 percent on the road side. The hotels, shops and industrial establishments dispose the grabage to the river and sea. The city corporation however will collect Rs 17 crore from the citizens. We had raised the concern to the city corporation. But till now there has not been a proper solution."

Other issues like Foothpats, parking, traffic jam, accidents etc were discussed.

City's former deputy mayor Judith Mascarenhas, AAP local unit head Dr Mercy Pinto, Santhosh kumar Kadri and others were present.
