Mysuru: Matchstick lighted by five-year-old burns house down

Mysuru, Mar 19: In an incident which occurred in a house at Lashkar Mohalla in the town on Wednesday March 18 afternoon, a matchstick lighted by a five-year-old boy started fire and consumed the entire house. The tragedy occurred in the house of Rajashekara Murthy on K R Hospital Road in Lashkar Mohalla.

Rajashekhara Murthy was playing with his grandson at the first floor of his ancient house, when a matchstick with which the boy was playing, ignited fire on a bed. The fire then spread to other items. Thick smoke enveloped the entire house. Other members of the house, who could not do anything because of thick smoke, called the fire brigade.

Fire bridge personnel removed tiles of the house and paved way for the smoke to escape. They then entered the first floor of the house and rescued the boy and his grandfather. The fire brigade personnel said they could douse the fire in an operation lasting one hour.

The house suffered extensive loss in the incident. The actual loss is yet to be assessed.
