Muscat, Feb 16: As we rightly published here, The Pancha Pandavas (The five Pandavas) of this year’s MCCP sports committee, Suraj Rebello, Jerald Mascarenhas, Flavia Menezes, Dolphy Frank and Dolly Gomes, were able to organize one of the finest and successful tournament for their members. It was the Annual Volleyball and Throwball Tournament presented by the Mangalorean Catholic Center of the Parish - MCCP (Sts. Peter & Paul Church – Ruwi) for their members at the Oman Sports Club Grounds – Al Khuwair, thoroughly enjoyed with a right sporting spirit.

After the registration, tournament commenced with a prayer by Antony Miranda, invoking divine blessings on the tournament. Suraj Rebello, Main Coordinator of Sports & Finance Committee, cheerful man with tremendous power and passion to organize systematic tournaments, welcomed the gathering. Clarence Pinto, main coordinator of Cultural & Spiritual Committee delivered a speech emphasizing active participation of the whole community in such tournaments.

Stany Jovin Menezes, a prominent Mangalorean working very closely with the MCCP Executive Committee and one of the responsible members for the success of the tournament, declared the tournament open.  Vincent Machado, ardent supporter of MCCP and its all activities was present during the tournament.

There were five teams formed for Volleyball Tournament – namely MCCP Express (Captain – Arun Pinto), Kadri Park (Captain – Sunil D’Sa), Kudla Express (Captain – Vinod Pereira), Karavali Express (Captain – Agnel Dias) and Namma Kudla (Captain – Ronald D Souza)

After having played 10 touch matches,  Arun Pinto’s team secured first place and Vinod Pereira’s men were to settle for runners up trophy. Arun Pinto and Vinod Pereira were declared as the Best Volleyball Players of the tournament for their style and handling the ball with perfection during the tournament.

Throwball matches for Ladies were filled lot of excitement and thrills. Ladies were able to play a spectacular game and thus entertaining the spectators with a fine and enjoyable game. Flavia D’ Souza, MCCP cultural secretary and talented stage artiste, was the captain of the winning team, Navaratna (Nine Jewels). The real MCCP talent of the Throwball game, Shaila D’ Souza’s team Magic 9 got the runners up trophy. Third place was obtained by MCCP Cool and team captain was Flavia Menezes.  Hilda Fernandes, Shaila D’ Souza and Namrata Machado were declared as the Best Throwball Players of the tournament.

Vincent Gomes, Stanley Fernandes and Clarence Pinto were the chief guests for the prize distribution ceremony, which was held immediately after the tournament.

Children also had various games and every child received a participation gift hamper. Every participated member of various teams also received gift hampers from Jerald Mascarenhas, Flavia Menezes, Terril Saldhana, Dolly Gomes and Dolphy Frank.

The D' Souza Family, Shirva (Bangalore), Simon, Judith, Carol and Kevin, was the main sponsor for this Annual event.

Omantel were the co-sponsor supported by Truck Oman, Areej Vegetable Oils (Minara), Ahmed Laskho and Associates, Premier Logistics, Khimji Ramdas, Ibn Sinna Pharmacy, Sweets of Oman, A’Safwah Dairy, National Biscuits, Mehdi Stores, National Mineral Water Company, Oman Agro Industries, DHL/Oman Air, W. J Towell, Al Amri Centre and Oman Foodstuff Company.

 Traditional and sumptuous food with Kunkad Sukem and Pollov was served for lunch. Delicious breakfast with Idlis and Sambar was enjoyed by everyone.
 
 Ultimately, it was a great tournament presented by the MCCP Sports committee combination of hard work, planning, lot of dedication and wholehearted diligence. Suraj, Jerald, Dolly Gomes, Flavia Menezes, Dolphy Frank and Terryl Saldhana certainly deserve a round of applause from the whole MCCP family.
