Facebook may launch caller ID app soon

New York, March 23 (IANS): Facebook might soon launch a new app that would enable users to know who is calling and automatically block unwarranted calls.

The new app - named Phone - would be an addition to Facebook's lengthy repertoire of offshoot apps that include Messenger, Home, Rooms, Groups and Slingshot, among others.

That info would include data pulled from Facebook's vast network of people and businesses, Digital Trends reported.

Tapping on the Facebook Phone link led users to a blank page, so presumably this is just something that's being tested internally for now.

With no official confirmation from Facebook, there's not much information about the app in the public domain as of now.

Facebook Messenger already includes calling capabilities and the feature is about to be introduced to the Facebook-owned WhatsApp too.

A dedicated Phone tool would take the functionality outside the main Facebook app, a strategy the social network seems increasingly keen on pursuing.
