Mangalore, Feb 20: As expected Rajashree Hegde of JD (S) was elected president of Dakshina Kannada ZP on Tuesday February 20 afternoon. While Rajashree who was the united candidate of JD (S) and BJP bagged 18 votes, Congress candidate Pramod Kumar bagged 16 votes.
It was only a couple of months ago that ZP was ruled by Congress-JD (S) coalition with Mamata Gatti as president and Dharanendra Kumar as her deputy. But Mamata had to sacrifice her post after she was done in by no confidence motion. Since Dharanendra Kumar had supported Congress during the no confidence motion, he too was removed from his post in the similar way a few days later.
With the election of Rajashree as vice-president, the mantle of ZP is now in the hands of women. While Sushma Janardhan of BJP has already been elected president of ZP, Rajashree has now been elected vice-president. This means that for the remaining period of 7 months, ZP will virtually be ruled by women.
Rajashree had played a mayor role in displacing both Mamata Gatti and Dharanendra from their post. It is also said that she had already put a condition before the BJP leaders that she would help them in no confidence motion only if she is made vice-president. Now BJP has fulfilled its promise by supporting Rajashree in vice-presidential elections.
