World Cup: India's title defence ends in heartbreak, Aussies enter final

Sydney, Mar 26 (PTI): India's near flawless title defence came to an agonising end today as they succumbed to pressure against the clinical Australians, who decimated the defending champions by 95 runs to romp into the finals and break a million Indian hearts.

In an engrossing semifinal clash, four-time champions Australia rode on Steve Smith's classy 105 to post an imposing 328/7 before bundling out India for 233 in 46.5 overs to set up a summit clash with trans-Tasmanian rivals and co-hosts New Zealand in Melbourne on Sunday.

After a dream run which saw them win seven matches on the trot, India's quest for a second successive World Cup title was finally thwarted by the formidable Australians, who outplayed Mahendra Singh Dhoni's bravehearts in every department at the fully-packed Sydney Cricket Ground.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (65, 65 balls) stood tall amid a disappointing batting show as he waged a lone battle to take India past the 200-run mark and make a match of it despite the steep asking rate. At the top, Shikhar Dhawan was another notable performer with 45-run knock.

The Indians had themselves to blame for the loss as the bowling unit, which had performed admirably till now, failed to deliver when it mattered the most while the batting also crumbled under pressure.

The jubilant Aussies broke into wild celebrations after Mitchell Starc castled Umesh Yadav (0) to dismiss the last Indian batsman in the 47th over. Home captain Michael Clarke was composed though as he shook hands with the Indians and acknowledged the Aussie supporters, who had interestingly been outnumbered by Indian fans today.

Set a record run chase, the first 300-plus score in a World Cup semifinal, the Indians started off with a flourish with Dhawan and Rohit Sharma (34, 48 balls) adding 76 runs for the first wicket in 12.5 overs.

But Dhawan's dismissal proved crucial as the runs dried up in the face of a determined effort by a fired up Australian pace battery.

Mitchell Johnson (2/50), Mitchell Starc (2/28) and Josh Hazlewood (1/41) put the fancied Indian line-up under immense pressure as wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals.

Despite today's heartbreak, India put up a commendable effort in defending the title after a horror tour of Australia prior to the mega-event after which not many experts of the game had given the team a chance.

The media gives the indian cricket team unnecessary more hype than required...for the amount of money and endorsements these guys make, they are not even half as talented as south african / australian or new zealand cricketers.

Blame it on our dead pitches and batting tracks which make them score centuries and become superstars in india, but are a flop overseas in swinging conditions...Even pakistan has a better pace bowling attack than ours! Ashwin, the sambhar eating spinner is a joke put in the team only under Dhoni's Chennai super kings insistence

However if such Under-arm Tennis Ball cricket is introduced then Indian Team will be full of Mangaloreans as our Mangalore boys do not play real cricket with hard ball & over-arm.

Some of our TV channels were broadcasting very shameful images and statements. They were showing people are praying in Mosques, temples etc. They were showing our players wife's and they were telling that because of women power our players are doing good. Now I have seen some of Indians are burning their photo's, breaking TV sets etc. It is a Game and one the day whichever team plays good will wins. When Bangladesh CM/People blamed re frees decision for their defeats, we objected. I feel it quite natural always loosing team will blame some one.

It's actually good that India lost the Semifinals. Many many lives saved, many families have peaceful atmosphere at homes, no air pollution, no parties etc..
India is a country where betting is rampant, money exchanging hands, crackers, no peace in family due to lost money, party, drinking, suicides, murders due to betting, bunking classes, offices, wasting time, power/electricity. Indian Team has avoided all the above without going into the Finals. HATS OFF TEAM INDIA.

We Indian male dominated society always have this habit of blaming girls for fault of others. even anushka had some bad films, but no body blamed kohli for that. so just leave them alone. they love each other and let them have their own time. after all it is a game and let's stop blaming. let us look at the positive side on this indian time which came up after such a dissmal tour down under in tri- series. we will never ever have a wonderful and cool captain like dhoni. we feel sad not because india lost but they lost without a good fight.

This match shows how much planning and preparation is done by Australian team. They made sure that Shami goes wicketless today. He has taken 3 wickets on average in the past 6 matches and we bowled out the opponent in every match and won those matches. Today he went nil and we could only pick seven wickets and Australia was able to reach 300 . We would have chased down a score around 280 any day.

Winning always is not so an easy, but it is very difficult for Indian fans to tolerate this defeat. However, we had good chance to win this match when we were at 14th over. After that we had sudden collapse when we lost Kohli, Dhoni could have been made some changes for this big game as he could habe been brought Akshar Patel or Binny in replacement of Jadeja and Rohit Sharma who were not in good touch throughout the tournament. This is the big mistake for our defeat in semi final. Had they ed for just to sit out? They (Akshar & Binni) could have been picked for final eleven in semi final. Might be we would have been in GLAD. But it is so BAD.

India loss in the semis was expected.
That they reached this stage was commendable and and due mainly
    to Dhoni's astounding leadership.

Actually the Indian bowling was mediocre and absence of wicket taking bowlers like Vinay Kumar, Abhinay Mithun and several better bowlers than those ed. Also Dhoni's penchant for sticking hard to the winning combination back fired.
Jadeja was a major flop and his place should have gone to Stewart Binny in the Semis.
Still India's performance in the current World cup was beyond expectations.
Dhoni as a captain has surpassed all past captains and he has lead India to the Top position in all formats of the game .
It will be almost impossible for a future captain to match MSD.

Chasing a score of 300 in a world cup semi final was always difficult, that too against a very good bowling and fielding side like Australia. Everyday is not SUNDAY , winning and losing is part of game. But how you lost and grace matters. Some of Indian players like rohit was into sledging against smith while he was batting. India is par superior team in comparison to Aus , period !. I blame this entirely on Dawan and Kohli playing casual shots , this triggered fall of wickets. Suddenly gentlemen became school boys , and fatal end. Also I feel talents to be honoured rather than India cements patronised lollypop players like Ashwin and Sir RAVINDRA Jadeja !. Cricket crazy India unhappy at the end in Semifinals. Australia shown that they are stronger team in batting fielding and bowling and they did well in the game. India suffered setback in batting middle order complete failed in semifinal. Todays batting not come as expected. Only Dhoni batted captain's knock well. Of course bowling was satisfaction. Overall did well up to quarter final only. There is much homework to do keep in same line. Back home there is plenty of young talent. Wish all the best for the best in the next world cup.

If India had won the toss & batted first, and posted around 300 score, they would have won the game, at SCG the toss matters. Indian bowlers did a very good job to restrict Aussies to 328,
But batsmen really failed after good start given by Dhawan & Rohit, batting second under lights, chasing 328 is a big ask.
But India have done well to reach till Semi final, Indian public should pat their back and say well done.
Australian cricketers play their game hard, fair & square.
It is only a game of cricket. The best team won.

Quite disappointing. Though chasing 300 plus is not always an easy task, India could have done if they did not lose quick wickets. I think Shikar Dhawan’s wicket was a turning point. Much was expected from Kolhi, who is known to have big scores while chasing but he disappointed us. Dhoni could not do much single-handedly. Also, losing toss is like losing match. It would have been a different scenario if India had won the toss and ed to bat. I always wished Indians to beat the arrogant Aussies to bring them down to the earth. Since India could not do it, hope and wish NZ would do it.
In conclusion, I would say we have to forget this loss and analyze India’s achievements. India entered the tournament with too many defeats against Australia and England but did extremely well to reach Semi-Final. In all the 7 matches India played before the Semi, it bowled out the opponents and did not allow them to cross 300 runs. That’s really a fantastic achievement. Let’s wish our team better luck next time.

It was not bad luck... it was irresponsible cricket by our main batsmen Kohli & Raina.

Opening was our biggest concern, but, in today's match Dhawan & Rohit gave good opening. They brought required run rate below 6 per over. But the middle order failed to cop up the pressure. In other words, they pushed themselves into pressurized situation.

Except Starc, none of the aussies bowlers bowled effectively. Still, our batsmen failed to handle them!

Now, we have to console ourselves, saying, at least we reached Semi-finals, where as, when WC started, our team was looking like, they will not even reach quarter-finals!!!

India could have won the match provided everyone had contributed their best which did not happen. Particularly Kohli, Raina. It’s a big disappointment to Team India fans. Winning or losing is part of the game. Let us take it in good spirit.

Right from the beginning it was due to dhoni's captaincy team has moved so far in this world cup. many indian batsman's catch was ped in this world cup. top performers of indian team in every matches has got 1 or more liflines. . .If in case there was few more catch s, india would have won, but dhavan and rohit got 1 lifeline, that was the only lifelines india got today it seems. . . . . Bowlers didnt do well. . Even Ashwin or Short Pitched pacers. . .

It is unfortunate the India lost Cricket against Australia.

    Our players didn’t play consistently.

Kohli and suresh Raina are simply throwing the wicket.

Dhoni has tried his best but wickets falling without runs and only wasting of balls. It is a great un-fortune.

Don't lose your hearts try and play game for India.
