Mumbai, Feb 20: The Devadiga Sangha here was founded eight decades ago and having made successful strides is well on its way of hitting a century.

The way it has conducted its activities for such a long period is index to the dedication of its leaders and community members.

With Yermal Koragappa Shriyan as its founder and Mannagudda Babu M Devadiga as founder president, it started its operations in Bora Bazar Street in Fort, Mumbai and ever since the association has grown from strength to strength over the years.

Under the leadership of present president Dharmapal U Devadiga and general secretary Vasant Karkal, the much-awaited completion of the dream project, Devadiga Bhavan, has been achieved. In 1995, the association had got a plot from the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) Ltd and the foundation stone was laid in 2000. Besides various facilities on different floors, it houses two community halls and an airconditioned auditorium to seat 600 persons.

For functions like marriages and other cultural programmes, the premises can in all accommodate about 1,200 persons. Being in the vicinity of Terna Medical College and Gamdevi temple, it is also close to the Palm Beach. Cool breeze and spacious parking are additional comforts experienced here.

The association has been promoting sports, health camps and scholarships. Under Dharmapal Devadiga's initiative, Akshaya Cooperative Credit Society also has been set up in Chembur.

The Silver Jubilee and the Golden Jubilee were celebrated over the years. The present committee is also continuing the good work and tradition laid down by the earlier incumbents.
