Panaji, Feb 21: The journalists' association of Goa joined hands TVS Motor Company in organizing a special sports event 'State Journalists' Sports Meet', an exclusive sports get-together for journalists and their families.

The competitions were held on the Don Bosco grounds in Panaji. All together 300 participants took part in the unique event.

Various competitions like hurdle race, box cricket, volleyball, 100 metres sprint, balloon race and others were held.

In the final count, The Navhind Times emerged overall champions and Herald the runners-up.

Herald Wins Battle, Loses War

Panaji: Herald Publications won most of the glamour events at the TVS Sports Carnival for Journalists, but lost out on the team championship by the narrowest of margins.

Until the last event of the day – Tug of War – Herald led the points table. Even in the Tug of War, which was to decide the champions, Herald won the first round, but then lost the next two against Navhind Times Publications.

Navhind Times took the Team Championship edging out Herald by two points.

Team Herald did well at the well-attended TVS Sports Carnival, on Don Bosco grounds.
 
In exclusive-journalists events such as 100 mts (both above and under-35), 50 mts for women, basketball free throws, football accuracy test, volleyball service, obstacle race, Herald had champions in most events, if not, a close second.

Herald’s medallists at the Games are as follows: Manuel Vaz (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze), Marcus Barreto (1 gold, 1 silver), Godrey Braganza (1 gold), Pradeep Vengurlekar (1 gold), Marcus Mergulhao (1 silver, 1 bronze), Sergio Caldeira (1 silver), Julian D’Costa (1 silver), Agnelo Pereira (1 bronze).

The first of its kind meet, organised by the Sports Journalists Association of Goa in collaboration with Don Bosco College and Gomes Sports Academy saw the presence of journalists from Mumbai and Kochi.

The BPED students of Don Bosco College did an appreciable job with the organization.

Earlier, Cecil Dewars, Senior vice-president Corporate Communications, TVS declared the championship open while Marcus Mergulhao (Herald) took the oath on behalf of the 200-odd participants.

Among those who made their presence felt at the Games was Goa Olympic Association secretary Gurudutta Bhakta, who completed the tough Obstacle Race in a decent time.

Others who were present include Director of Sports Dr Susana de Souza, President of Panjim Traditional Festival Committee Joaquim Teles, Baseball Federation of India Chairman Ramakhant Angle, Goa Volleyball Association Vice-Presidents Kishore Narvekar, Hugo Gonsalves, former GFA vice-president Victor Gonsalves, RC Lions Club’s Ragendra Patel, Don Bosco Rector Fr Paul D’Souza, Don Bosco Administrator Fr Wilfred Fernandes, Goa Football Association Secretary Savio Messias, Goa Motor Sports Association President Ashley Gomes and Goa Softball Association President Dharma Chodankar.
