Phenomenal to see hard work pay off: Starc

Melbourne, March 29 (IANS): Adjudged Player of the Tournament for his outstanding bowling performance throughout the cricket World Cup, Australia’s pace spearhead Mitchell Starc has said it was nice to witness his hard work bearing results.

“I've worked really hard at it for a number of months with Craig McDermott (Australia bowling coach). A few series ago, we sat down and to see it come to fruition it's been phenomenal,” said Starc at the post-match presentation ceremony here on Sunday.

In the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) here on Sunday, Australia beat New Zealand by seven wickets to lift their fifth World Cup trophy. Starc starred with figures of 2/20 from eight overs.

Asked about the swinging delivery that got rid of New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum, Starc said they had hatched the plot earlier.

“Little lucky. It was a plan Craig and I had but to see it executed was brilliant. Brendon's been fantastic all tournament and it was important to get him early and we did,” the left-armer said, who also scalped wicketkeeper-batsman Luke Ronchi.

Starc, who picked up 22 wickets in the tournament to become the highest wicket-taker along with Trent Boult of New Zealand, appreciated the support of the home crowd who turned up in thousands to support them.

“The support from the Australian public and the fans here was fantastic. I am just going to enjoy this one for tonight,” said Starc.
