Puttur, Feb 24: In a bizarre incident a young man hacked a his neighbour woman to death before chopping off the hands of latter's husband at Vodla near Periadka of Uppinangady here on Friday February 23.

While Devaki (50), a housewife was brutally killed while her husband Babu Gowda's (60) hands were chopped off by accused Vasanth Gowda (35).    The accused has been arrested by Uppinangady police.

Devaki was returning home from the nearby woods after collecting firewood when Vasanth came from behind and attacked her with sabre.  He hit her on her neck, belly and head owing to which she sustained serious injuries.  She immediately shouted for help listening to which her husband Babu Gowda came running. Though she ran towards a neighbours' house, it was of no use as Vasanth attacked her continuously with sabre. 

When her husband Babu Gowda came to her rescue, Vasanth attacked him and chopped his both hands and fled the place.  Babu Gowda was initially admitted to government hospital here but later moved to a private hospital in Mangalore.

The news immediately reached Uppinangady police who came to the place and arrested the accused.  During the initial investigation he has told the police that he had loved Babu Gowda's daughter and wanted to marry her.  But they had opposed the marriage and had given her in marriage to someone else.  Enraged by this, he hatched the plan to kill the couple, he said.

Babu Gowda couple has two daughters and two sons.  However, all of them are working in distant places.  So his niece (sister's daughter) Usha was staying with them.
