Mangalore, Feb 27: The demand for setting up a separate pay commission farmers to prevent suicide by farmers was placed by Devinder Sharma of Forum for Bio-Technology and Food Security.
He was speaking to the press here on Tuesday. Speaking about suicides by poverty- stricken farmers, Sharma said that farmers must be included in the 6th pay commission and also provided a monthly income.
The government which states that it will protect its farmers had adopted an exit policy even though the total suicide deaths of farmers in 1993-2003 was around 1,50,000 and in 2006 alone it was a shocking 17,000 farmers
A proof to the ‘exit policy’ is the introducing of various bills so that the farmers leave farming. Lacs of farmers have been displaced in the name of SEZ.
Nagarika Seva Trust president Somanath Nayak was also present on the occasion.
