Mangalore, Mar 1: A lawyer couple at Sullia in the district sustained burns when some persons reportedly threw acid on them at around 10 pm on Tuesday, according to police sources.

The sources said that three persons went to the house of M Venkappa Gowda, a criminal lawyer, and asked him to come out on the pretext of discussing a case.

When the couple opened the door two persons who were in the courtyard reportedly threw acid on them. Another person was waiting with a motorcycle. Later, all the three reportedly fled on the motorcycle.

Gowda, who was admitted to the government hospital at Sullia, has been shifted to a hospital in Mangalore, the sources said. His wife sustained minor burns. Gowda is the former president of Sullia Town Panchayat.

Sullia police have registered a case and investigations are on.
