Mangalore, Mar 2: A major theft in a temple of the city has taken the police officers in surprise. Thieves entered the temple situated in the Police lane in the heart of the city and have stolen gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 2.60 lacs.

According to police sources, the thieves gained entry into the Sri Muneshwara Ganapathi Temple on Thursday night by breaking open one of its doors.

The gold and silver ornaments which adorn the deity were found missing on Friday morning and the temple priest was shocked at this sign and informed the police.

Venkatesh Prasanna, Circle Inspector, Pandeshwar Police Station and SI Ravi along with finger print experts visited the temple and investigation is underway.

Two silver ornaments (mukavada) worth Rs 1.40 lac and Rs 20,000, gold chain worth Rs 20,000 and other ornaments were reported stolen.
