Udupi, Apr 8: The former Supreme Court justice K Jagannath Shetty passed away on Tuesday April 7, at fifth block Rajajinagar Bengaluru.
Justice Shetty was born on December 15, 1926 in Ambalpady Udupi. After graduation from St. Aloysius College, Mangaluru, he obtained law degree from Osmania University, Hyderabad, then he joined for advocate profession on July 14, 1945 and worked as an advocate till 1955.
Later he shifted to Bengaluru in 1956. He was appointed as additional Judge of the high court of Karnataka on June 25, 1970 and he got permanent order in 1971.
He was the chief justice for from October 24, 1985 to August 27, 1986. He was appointed as chief justice of the Allahabad High Court in October 1986 and elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court on May 1, 1987.
After the retirement he became the chairman of First National Judiciary Pay Commission. The report by this commission was popularly known as ‘Shetty Commission Report’.
He served as temporary professor at Bengaluru government law college for ten years. He was active member of Mysore Bar Council from 1961 to 1970 for two terms.He worked as arbitrator in national as well as international issues.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
