South African girl barred from joining IS

Cape Town, April 8 (IANS): A 15-year-old South African girl was taken off a flight at the Cape Town International Airport after she left home allegedly to join the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, the government said.

Her relatives contacted the authorities after she disappeared from her parents' home on Sunday morning, Xinhua news agency reported.

The girl had been using social platforms to interact with strange people and read materials that suggested that she was getting an interest to join the terror group called IS, according to State Security Minister David Mahlobo.

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) said on Tuesday that it has noted with concern reports about the girl being taken off a flight in Cape Town.

DHA spokesperson Mayihlome Tshwete attributed the rescue of the girl to the recent amendments to South Africa's immigration law and the promulgation of new immigration regulations.
