Open source software policy will empower society: Wipro

Bengaluru, April 17 (IANS): The Indian government's policy on open source software would open up huge opportunities to participate in its drive to adopt it for extensive use, a top official of IT bellwether Wipro Ltd said on Friday.

"The government's policy on open source adoption is a critical step towards building a digitally empowered society. The initiative will usher in efficiency, transparency and reliability in the country's technology infrastructure and create jobs," Wipro chief executive T.K. Kurien said in a statement here.

The increasing pace of adoption of open source software and methodologies led by advancements in analytics, cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoT) have catapulted open source into a core technology asset for enterprises worldwide.

"We have identified open source as a core technology initiative and our investments in building a large cadre of skilled personnel is reaping dividends as reflected by the increasing customer interest," Kurien asserted.

The global software major's open source practice offers consulting services to clients, including government agencies looking to adopt open source in their technology landscape.

"Our services encompass developing and implementing open source policies and processes, advisory and strategy consulting, roadmap development, integration, community engagement, legacy migration, governance, risk mitigation and support," Kurien added.

The IT outsourcing major also helps customers build open source platforms on applications, big data, infrastructure, IoT, hardware and testing.

In the product engineering space, reusable/licensable IP blocks will help shrink product development timelines for various market segments.
