Farmer attempts suicide at AAP rally

New Delhi, April 22 (IANS): A farmer from Rajasthan was in critical condition here on Wednesday after he hanged himself from a tree at an AAP rally called to protest the land bill.

The man was unconscious and barely breathing when Aam Aadmi Party activists climbed the tree and brought him down after some people saw him hanging.

The incident, witnessed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal among others, sparked chaos at the rally attended by thousands near Jantar Mantar in the heart of the capital.

Police rushed the man, identified as Gajender Singh from Dausa in Rajasthan, to a hospital even as hundreds of AAP supporters raised slogans against Delhi Police.

A suicide note in Hindi dropped by the man from the tree before he hung himself said he had nothing to look forward to in life as his entire crop had been destroyed by unseasonal rains.

He ended the note with "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Rajasthan".

Kejriwal later told the rally that he would visit the man at the hospital.
