Sanaa, April 22 (IANS): One day after the Saudi-led Arab coalition announced that it was terminating its military offensive in Yemen, airstrikes on Wednesday hit military barracks in southwestern Yemen shortly after they were taken over by Houthi rebel militias, witnesses told Efe news agency.

In addition to this air raid in the city of Taiz, an arms depot near Sanaa, also under Houthi control, was bombarded, while Houthi positions in the southern port city of Aden were also attacked by coalition ships on Wednesday.

Houthi fighters and their loyal military forces took control on Wednesday over the headquarters of Brigade 35, which had remained loyal to Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

Taiz residents explained that Houthi tanks shelled the brigade's headquarter in the morning, forcing the troops to flee.

Several soldiers were killed and wounded in the attack, although a final death toll is yet not known.

The Saudi-led Arab coalition announced on Tuesday night the end of Operation al-Hazm Storm against Houthi rebels, who overthrew President Hadi and took control over most of the country.

The coalition did, however, announce the start of Operation Renewal of Hope to rebuild the country and pave the way for the transitional process, in accordance with the decision made by the UN Security Council.
