UP Police's WhatsApp service a hit

Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh), April 22 (IANS): A WhatsApp service launched by Uttar Pradesh Police in areas hit by communal conflicts like Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur and Shamli for quick response has became a hit among people. They are using it even to send images of traffic jam and illegal mining, an official said.

"Since we the launched WhatsApp number 9720441212, over a dozen complaints started reaching my office daily," said Saharanpur Deputy Inspector General of Police Ashok Raghav.

"We developed a mechanism and set up an office. Sub-Inspector S.K. Rai was assigned to channelise the complaints," Raghav said.

"Initially, the system was introduced for a better interaction between top police officials and public after the areas suffered worst communal violence. However, people were so enthusiastic that they even started sending images of traffic jam, illegal mining and matrimonial disputes."

"This system will not only benefit people, but also police and administration. I am sure that more and more people of Saharanpur will take advantage of this app," added Raghav.
