Panaji, Mar 15: Even as the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) grapples for space to dispose its solid waste, initiatives for composting wet biodegradable waste has begun to reap rewards with rich compost generated and sold by the corporation.

The CCP introduced composting stations for treating biodegradable waste six months ago, since then they have generated over two tones of compost.

According to CCP’s solid waste management consultant, the Corporation collects the compost from the 75 established compost stations, which is thereafter sieved at the St Inez Animal Shelter where space has been allocated for this purpose.

Priced at Rs 6 per kg, presently the compost is being bought by a few ‘green finger’ individuals and also used for the city gardens and even for the garden beautification of the city cemetery.

The CCP is exploring the possibility of marketing the compost which is chemical free and generated from the city segregated waste and use of natural ingredients of microorganisms and dung.

It is learnt that that compost to the tune of Rs 4,000 has been sold and the demand for more has added further impetus to the segregation and composting drive of the corporation.
