Irish Sikh poll candidate forced to remove turban in Dubai

London, May 4 (PTI): Northern Ireland's first-ever Sikh candidate contesting the UK general election has complained that he was allegedly forced to remove his turban by police at Dubai airport.

Amandeep Singh Bhogal, a Conservative party prospective parliamentary candidate for the May 7 polls, was on his way back to Belfast when he was allegedly made to remove his turban and 'kara' (bracelet).

Singh expressed his anger through a series of tweets and retweets - "My Sikh faith being grossly violated at @DubaiAirports by @DubaiPoliceHQ as not being allowed leave until I take off and leave my Sikh bangle".

An official statement from the Conservative Party is awaited as UK authorities got involved to try and resolve the situation.

Bhogal, who was born in Jalandhar, has made his mark on the campaign trail for the Conservative party in his trademark blue turban.

The 31-year-old represents the Upper Bann constituency in the heart of Northern Ireland, which is 54 per cent Protestant and deeply Christian and churchgoing.

His candidacy is attracting widespread media interest though he is not expected to win the seat, which is currently held by David Simpson of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

Few years ago one of my bag not loaded in flight and left orphan in Dubai airport. When I reached Bombay airport I lodged complaint at Bombay airport police towards missing baggage. For accepting complaint they made me hours to wait and after hundred question not given any hope for their investigation. They had given airport number to follow up where I got negative reply or no reply. After vacation I directly went to Dubai airport police and they taken me to lost baggage section.Dubai police asked me to find the bag in lost baggage room. Without asking any question police hand over the bag to me and asked me to check every thing is there. When I scared not found which I am looking police officer before I tell he told me your gold is safe in locker.Go to higher officer and show this receipt he will hand over to you and exactly what it happen. I had never seen such a great gesture ,welcome, smile, friendliness, cooperation serving tea by police.I am grateful to Dubai police. Respect the rule respect the police.

Kakar refers to any or all of the five articles of the Sikh faith. Because the name of each one of the five articles begins with the letter (or sound of) K, they are commonly referred to as the five K's of Sikhism: Kachhera, Kanga, Kara, Kes and Kirpan The kirpan may be made of either steel or of iron.

If same Sikh asked to remove Kirpan i.e. sword. whether he will complain that he was allegedly forced to remove his Kirpan by police at Dubai airport... How many people will support his claim??????

Ramesh S...why do you get adhika itch...We are not speaking about streets but airport security...Every people must support it..It is common for muslims when they travel abroad especially western countries they face lengthy security check procedures...it has become common for us.....Coming to burkha in france ...it is not for security but it is french version of secularism keeping religion totally out of public sphere...Even sikhs cant display their religious symbols they too protested against it..did you claim it as adhika prasanga.....Muslim doesnt wear such symbols we only cover our body ...Opinion of european lawmakers is burkha is sign of oppression on women...If burkha oppresses women why those who protest against it are also women..most of muslim women cover their body even in western countries and large converts to Islam are also women and they too wear it by their own will....If it is for security security reason no problem in showing ones face in front of security officials ..

The Omani Dress is khanjar is tucked underneath a waist belt and is situated at the front and centre of the wearer's body… It used to form part of everyday attire. If any Omani having Khanjar tucked underneath a waist belt is allowed to travel in Indian airports without removing it, or if the Airport Security says not allowed will you support Indian security or Omani National???????

This is not a big issue as this brainless sardarji has created it. One has to view it more positively from the point of view of security practice and its not meant for any harassment or racial act...Even muslim women in burka are asked to go to a adjacent room and body searched..I travel a lot and the practice here is to remove all metal belongings, shoes and belts and put them in the xray machine.. Next time this brainless sardarji should avoid transiting via Dubai and take a direct flight.

Dubai police are million times better than Indian police and Dubai police are friendly and their morale and character are unmatchable to those of Indian police...Dubai pOlice is the best.

This sardarji knows that he will not win the election yet he contested..so 100% sardarji brain..

this is not the first attack we are seeing against minorities be it hindus, sikhs, muslims
    etc in western countries.
the 100's of attacks on muslims ,sikhs and hindus in western countries prove that
western countries are hardcore criminal, racist ,communal and have no
    regard to human rights.

these very same western countries who treat blacks,
and other minorities as subhuman are very
eager to create a false report on human rights violation, religious tolerance in countries like india etc
which can be termed as biggest joke of mankind.how can world forget that these western countries were the ones who
created the term slave trade and slave labour by treating blacks as slaves and also apartheid in south africa.
    shame on these countries.

He was forced to remove turban in Dubai, not in western country!
Be in Dubai or US, security checking is NOT wrong, it is a must!
Sikh candidate has his tradition's concern and Dubai airport has it's security concern!
    People should understand one another.

World population is going down in emotional intelligence day by day.
Their own pride is ruling today.
Emotional intelligence, concerning one another is lacking today.
Emotional Quotient is more important than IQ.
If we refer history, Lui Pasteur, Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela,Mother Teresa and Abdul Kalam, they had more emotional intelligence so they excelled.
