Iran to send humanitarian aid to Yemen via sea

Tehran, May 7 (IANS): The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) will this weekend send a cargo ship carrying relief aid to Yemen, an official said on Thursday.

A cargo ship is being loaded in the port city of Bandar Abbas and will head to one of Yemen’s ports this weekend, Press TV reported citing IRCS secretary general Ali Asghar Ahmadi.

Ahmadi added that IRCS had been trying to dispatch humanitarian aid to Yemen by air, but was unable to do so due to Saudi Arabia's blockade of the war-ravaged country. Therefore, he said, coordination was made with certain Persian Gulf littoral states to dispatch the aid by sea.

The ship contains 2,500 tonnes of medical supplies, foodstuff and tents, he was quoted as saying.
