NHRC notice on relief to UP police atrocity victims

New Delhi May 15 (IANS): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government, asking why suitable interim relief may not be recommended for four victims of police atrocities in Kasganj district.

The commission also directed the chief secretary and the director general of police of the state that they shall submit the details of legal and departmental action taken in the matter within six weeks' time.

NHRC's attention was drawn to the case when a woman, wife of one of the victims, claimed in May, 2013 that her husband, daughter and son were forcibly picked up by some persons claiming to be policemen from their house in Kasganj district. It was later found that a sub-inspector of the police was behind the incident.

The commission observed that the said police officer had taken the law in his own hands. The complaint as well as the statement of the petitioner recorded by the inquiry officer discloses commission of cognizable offence.
