India, China together can be force of good: Modi

Shanghai, May 16 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the Indian community in Shanghai, said that India and China represent one third of humanity and together can be force of good for the entire world.

Addressing a 5,000-strong enthusiastic crowd of Indians, amid chants of "Modi, Modi", the prime minister said that it was a privilege to address the expatriates on the anniversary of the BJP's and his huge win at the elections a year ago.

"Together India and China comprise one third of humanity. Have we ever recognized this strength? The times have changed and that is why China and India can resolve not only their own problems but also help the rest of the world," Modi said in Hindi at the Expo Exhibition & Convention Centre.

He said when he took over he had promised he will work hard and added that he has tried to live up to the promise and not taken any holiday and worked day and night.

He also thanked President Xi Jinping for having broken from tradition to welcome him in Xi'an, his hometown.

"For the first time in China, the president came outside Beijing to another city to welcome the leader of another country. I thank the president for the welcome in Xi'an," said Modi

Modi said the welcome was not for him but for the 1.25 billion Indians and that India-China ties are centuries old.
