Lawyers stay away from courts in Jammu

Jammu, May 18 (IANS): Lawyers throughout the city abstained from the courts on Monday to press their demand for setting up an AIIMS-like medical institute in the region.

Abhinav Sharma, president of the Jammu Bar Association (JBA), called for a boycott of the courts in the region by lawyers to press for JBA's demand to establish the institute.

Work in the Jammu wing of the state high court and in subordinate courts was adversely affected due to the boycott.

The central government has already announced that an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) would be established in the Jammu region while an entity patterned on the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) would be set-up in the Kashmir Valley.

The IIT would be set-up in Samba district while the site for the AIIMS is yet to be notified.
