Bangladesh tightens border vigil to fight human trafficking

Dhaka, May 19 (IANS): The Bangladeshi government will establish more Border Operational Post (BOP) of paramilitary border guards in southeastern Chittagong Hill Tracts areas to fight the growing cases of human trafficking.

Bangladesh State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said this on Tuesday at a press conference, Xinhua news agency reported.

"We've decided to strengthen our efforts to better combat the problem of human trafficking by establishing more BOP of Border Guard of Bangladesh in around 250 km border line in Chittagong Hill Tracts that has not been well protected," Jamal said.

Three Bangladesh hill districts are bordering India to the north and north-east while bordering Myanmar to the east.

"Hope the growing human trafficking problems could be stemmed with setting up of more BOP in the region where we could not set up BOP previously because these areas are remote."

A high-level meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair on Tuesday approved a nearly 5 billion taka project to strengthen entire functioning of the coast guards.
