New service tax rate of 14 percent to come into effect from June 1

New Delhi, May 19 (PTI): The new service tax rate of 14 percent will come into effect from June 1, government today said, in a move that will make eating out in restaurants, insurance and phone bills expensive, among many other things.

The service tax is currently levied at the rate 12.36 percent including education cess.

Top official sources said that the new rate of 14 percent announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his Budget for 2015-16 would come into effect from June 1.

In his Budget speech, Jaitley had said that to facilitate a smooth transition to levy of tax on services by both the Centre and the States, "it is proposed to increase the present rate" of service tax plus education cess from 12.36 percent to a consolidated rate of 14 percent.

Service tax is levied on all services, expect a small negative list.

Advertising, air travel, services of architect, certain type of constructions, credit card, even management, and tour operator are some of the important services which attract tax.

I remember some time back one "settee" from Mumbai made headlines printing derogatory remarks against then UPA government for charging 12.36% service tax. This made a national news and NDA took political mileage out of it.

This what this poor "setty" might be doing now as his own NDA government increased service tax to 14%.

May be he is going on a "pada yatre" with tatte's to New Delhi ???

@paid bhakt anata - I will give you proof after which you should stop your false propaganda.

Read Financial Express: "SBI to refinance Adani’s loans through 5/25".

Under this agreement, the proposal will provide refinancing of Rs 15,000 crore of loans by a consortium of bankers, of which SBI alone, it is understood, will refinance close to Rs 5,000 crore — R2,900 to APML and Rs 2,100 to APRL.

And i also want to you to read how a heavily indebted Adani is trying to invest in a unfeasible project in Australia.

Pls read the following article in a Greenpeace Australia news site- "Adani’s Queensland coal project in turmoil as doubts surface over State Bank of India loan".

FEKU said during his overseas tour "Before 2014, Indians were ashamed to call themselves Indians. They cursed themselves to born in India. They were looking for go out of the country to earn money or settle down. Now situation is completely changed. Indians are proud of India"!

Is this the way, a Prime Minister of any country should say? That too, outside the country, where the outside media publishes such news on their channels/print media/web site??

BJPians are defending FEKU and saying, "FEKUji did not mention any PM or party name in his Bhaashan"

Is world is blind and dumb like 'FEKU Bhakts' & nobody knows, who was ruling country before 2014. Is it necessary to mention it???

Even BJP was among one, who ruled before 2014 (under Vajapayee PMgiri). Was FEKU and his bhakts were ashamed to call themselves Indians, during Vajapayee time also? Did Adani, Ambani, Tata, Birla, Premji, Narayan Moorthy, Jindal etc.. businessmen, established themselves after 2014 only? Do all Indians will stop going abroad in future, because FEKU is PM and they can earn money in India itself?

While you are booking an apartment for you and your dependents, don't overlook your expensive dependent, the Govt.

In addition to the value of apartment, you require to help that dependent by keeping aside about 21%. The break-up:

Service tax on 25-30% of value @14% =4%
    Vat @ 10%
    Registration 1%
    Stamp duty 6%

Just do not stop there, depending on location and builder, you have to think of other things, such as:

    Parking place charges
    Reticulated gas connection charges
    Sewerage system charges
    Terrace covering charges
    Water filtration system charges
    Generator (some may not charge)
    Legal Charges when registering.

Not a big burden on common people. To boost our country economy one must do a little sacrifice for country.
Apart from increase in service tax of 1.64%, this Budget will boost the Economic of India.

History of Increase in service tax :-
-5% service tax raised by Congress Narshima Rao govt in 1994

-Then again Congress Govt of Manmohan increased to 8% and he brought education cess of 2% in 2004

-Again in 2006 Congress Govt of Manmohan Singh increase the service tax to 12%

-Later in 2007 Manmohan Singh Govt of Congress added Finance Act, 2007 and imposed a new secondary and higher education cess of one percent on the service tax, increasing the total education cess to 3% percent

-And Narendra Modi have just increase 1.64% service tax, that will cost Just Rs. 16 on spend of 1000

Rounding off service tax to 14%. This again is till March 31, 2016 as from April 01, 2016, GST will be introduced whose flat rate will be around 16% and it will abolish Service Tax.

Which means after One year you don't need to Pay service tax.

This is Win Win Situation for the Common People like me atleast.
Even the Wealth Tax is abolished.

Super rich people and Politicians are always with Loans and to them Wealth Tax not applicable....

Poor people don't have Wealth...Their Wealth is their Childrens....So GOVT cant tax on them

Rest middle class...who struggling to give the best to children and save something for their retired life.....So Govt levied Wealth Tax is applicable on them on their hard earned Gold/Silver etc....

The above things I quoted from our great Harvard educated Economist - Dr.Subramanya Swami about Income Tax and Wealth Tax.....

Manju, Being in Kuwait and serving minority masters and earning tax free salary you can talk rubbish and nonsense. If you want to serve your Feku master and a true bhakt of the feku please come down to India and work . Even after one year of Feku government its a pity you have to still work in Kuwait, why your Feku couldn't find you a job in India. you work in India and pay taxes and than write the same comments,

The NDA is taking the economy in the right direction. What did the UPA do? First forgave farmers loans, then food bill, NREGA, direct bank transfers and destroyed our economy. The economy was in dire straits when NDA assumed power. Only achievement of UPA was to make people lazy and dependent on Govt handouts.

It's good that this govt is making eating out expensive. Why can't people cook in their homes and eat just as before ?Alas nowadays no one wants to cook at home but order food from outside. We could buy a whole chicken and eat it at home for the price of only 2 pieces of chicken in a restaurant.

Cooking at home should be encouraged, right I agree, 100%.
However, uncontrolled price rise and complex taxes, people should oppose and agitate.
Complex rules are making mess of common mans life.
Govt should simplify and not to complicate tax and administrative regime.
We shouldn't take things lying down. There are lot of pilferage.
Is it not Govt duty to curb such pilferage and reduce taxes? See what is happening with natural resources!

Our governments do some strange things. They put high tax on liquor, then raise the other taxes that drive people to drink.

Tax his land, tax is wage
tax his bed in which he lays
Tax his tractor, tax his mule
Teach him taxes is a rule.

Tax his car, tax his bike
Tax his food, tax his drink
Tax his chew, tax his smoke
Teach him taxes are not a joke.

Tax his coffin, tax his grave
Tax the sod in which he lays
Put these words upon his tomb
"Taxes drove me to my doom."

And when he is gone, we will not relax
We will still be after Inheritance tax.
